Sacramento Pride 2007

remembering Miss Bianca

Miss Bianca

Our community mourns the loss of Miss Bianca, community icon.

She will be remembered for her community work organizing, promoting and fund raising, for her social parties, but mostly for being the best friend one could wish for with her smile and big heart.

Online death notice (published in the Sacramento Bee 9/15/2007) and online guest book available at  www.legacy.com/SacBee/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=94465091

Memorial service was Saturday at 5 -

Date: Saturday September 15, 2007
Place: Club 21 1119 21 street, Sacramento, CA. 95814
Time: 5:00PM

Rainbow Festival, September 2, 2007 Rainbow Festival 2007 crowdRainbow Festival 2007.  the streets around 20th and K are blocked for the annual festival.  Time for rainbow people, friends, family, humans and vendors to converge downtown on a hot summer day to celebrate us.

A few anti Rainbow protesters showed up and managed to hold up the banner behind the stage that read "re-criminalize sodomy"...

Rainbow Festival 2007 Stop Hate Crime booth... which is why we need our activist friends, like the Satendar Justice Coalition www.satendar.org who are working to help us all stop hate crime.

My friends, we need to be vigilant, keep pushing for  equality and watch out for each other.  Stepping off soap box now.

Lots of booths promoting our local organizations ...

Rainbow Festival 2007 CCGRAMy favorite is the  CCGRA booth - no, not just a booth, a small slice of wild west scene - covered wagon, sign post, hay bull, cowboys, and that cowboy swinging the lasso inviting us in.

This group does a lot of good things for our community,  always smiling and making us smile.

West Coast Diversity Summit July 21 2007 West Coast Diversity Summit July 21, 2007Diversity Summit attracts 100 people from the community to discuss hate and violence against minorities and to open lines of communication.

Attendees were diverse - from local gay community figures to 4 representatives from the Russian community.

Michael Gorman gave a terrific keynote talk making an analogy between Satendar Singh's murder and a canary in a coal mine.  That is him above at the podium (like you could tell, he is so tiny in the pic).

Marghe_and_Jerry

To give some background history, Marghe Covino and Jerry Sloan spoke.

Marghe made an old as dirt joke, everyone laughed, but we respect our elders.  For real.

Jade Baranski

Jade Baranski  (left) gave a brief but powerful PowerPoint presentation on Non-engagement.

Then the floor was opened to all

for 5 minute presentations and comments which ranged from yes to dull and self serving.  Everyone expressed their opinion.  And diverse opinions were expressed.

Michael Misha Kennedy did a smooth job as MC.  Bill videoed the event.  Nathan Feldman organized the event.  Well done Nate!

Russians4 members of the Russian/Slavic/ Ukraine community were present.  They received big applause for being there.

I did not catch their names and affiliations, my bad reporting.

Two spoke, the man in the dark shirt addressed the summit via the interpreter in the blue shirt.

His talk as  interpreted included phrases like marriage is between a man and a woman and we will outnumber you which totally confused the audience.  Lost in translation I guess.

Darrell Steinberg (California State Senator representing the Sacramento area)  spoke with eloquence and power -

"Here is what we pledge tonight as Sacramentans - we will not tolerate hate, hate speech or violence in any form against the gay and lesbian community or any community of Sacramento."

Pictured:  Local politicians including Dave Jones (California State Assembly representing the Sacramento area), Darrell Steinberg (California State Senator representing the Sacramento area), Christopher Cabaldon (Mayor of West Sacramento), Mariko Yamada (Yolo County Supervisor).

First Annual Sacramento Dyke March June 15 2007 STARTS HERE DYKE MARCHFirst Annual Sacramento Dyke March

kicks off Sacramento Pride 2007 weekend.

Marching down L Street, from the center, to the west steps of the capitol building.

Speeches, True Colors sings, good turn out, I'm guessing 300 people.

Sacramento Pride Parade and Festival June 16 2007 Sacramento Pride Parade 2007 startThe parade making its way  down 7th street.  At front are the women on motorcycles and after them you can see the flags of the Sacramento Valley Veterans.

Sacramento Pride 2007 California Council of ChurchesA large number of churches and religious leaders marched together.

A group of protesters from a local russian christian church picketed.

Sacramento Pride Parade 2007 rocksThe parade included the usual politicians, drag queens and  church organizations.

This is my favorite entry from Sacramento Greek. SAC PRIDE ROCKS!  And it was a rock.

Sacramento Pride Festival 2007 bullNew to the festival was a mechanical bull operated by Capitol Crossroads and Sam at the controls.

A steady line of riders were bucked off but a few hung on for the ride.  All were cheered on.

This still photo simply does not capture the wild and erratic behavior of the bull.
