Sacramento Pride 2005

Construction time at the local nightclubs Oct 4 hunky construction worker   Our gay nightclubs are all under construction at once.  The universe is expanding.   I'm thinking this is great, more places to go, more people will come out, new places to explore, synergy in Lavender Heights.  Well done.

Where will we all park?

Some snapshots of the progress as of Oct 4, 2005, venues in alphabetical order.

Sacramento News & Review article about the construction, October 27 issue.

The Depot,

construction going on between the Depot & Hot Rods, behind that fence.

I hear it's going to be a gay disco.  Thumpa, thumpa, a Queer As Folk reference, a tv show the Depot played for us.

Looking forward to it, yes.

Faces,

big expansion, this will be great when it is finished.

Swimming pool.

Head Hunters,

ever morphing about what kind of place it will be, always "open soon".

The place is looking good and the new  restaurant menu looks tasty.

So open already!

Head Hunters,

back side.  The fence is way cool.  I like the patio & palm trees.

The building on the left will be a coffee shop.

The Mercantile,

I heard they couldn't renovate the building itself because it is historic (?) (too many old queens?) * so they built a patio expansion with rest rooms.

I like it, the patio at the Merc is a fun place to be.

We won't miss the overflowing urinals in the old bathrooms.

All this construction is going to make a better Lavender Heights for us all.  * The old queens remark was not flippant, we all have old friends and friends that are old, this is a shout out to them.  Respect.

Sacramento Pride 2005 This year Sacramento Pride (formerly known as the Freedom Fair) included a parade.

At 10:00 am we (Jose, Felix and Mark) were on 9th Street ready for the parade.  There were more police on hand to block cross traffic than parade watchers.

Soon the parade arrived with the roar of dozens of motorcycles (and a few scooters) as the Sisters of Scota lead the way.  Great way to start the parade, well done Sisters of Scota!

The next parade participants were the SVL color guard.

There were  politicians, local and Mark Leno.  Didn't see Mayor Fargo.

And floats.

This was my favorite float, the Mercantile Saloon, perfectly capturing the patio bar atmosphere.  Well done Merc!

  < UC Davis Marching Band.

These guys were a hoot, inspired chaos.

My favorite of the whole parade and they (probably) aren't even gay.

Thanks UC Davis Marching Band, WELL DONE!

After the parade passed, we followed it down the street.  There were more spectators for the parade closer to the park.

The Sacramento Bee reported  ( 'We're proud of who we are'  6/12/05 ) that there were 43 parade groups.

  On the stage

This year we kicked back and watched several acts on the stage.

Gayle Von & Witness This were entertaining blues, banter and fun as always.

Cheer SF always pump up the crowd and amaze us with their acrobatics.  I think I heard they have been coming to Sac for 17 years and as a group have been entertaining for 25 years. Y-e-a-h Cheer SF!

And our own Cheer Sacramento  ( ^ pictured) put on a show in conjunction with Cheer SF.  Cheer Sac rocks!   You can see Cheer Sac acrobatics in the picture.  Well done, I'm proud of my locals.

The main stage MC was great!

The Lambda Center is requesting any and all photos of the parade and event for their archives, send them to jason@lambdasac.org

The diversity of this event Sacramento Pride 2005 (formerly known as the Freedom Fair)  always amazes me.  Always.  Amazes.  We are one big family on this one big planet.

So diverse was this affair that I signed a Republican petition.  No member of the Republican party here, but I joined the Log Cabin Republicans effort to end "don't ask, don't tell."  I also signed the Stonewall Democrats petition to Arnold to not support the state constitution amendment to define marriage & revoke partner benefits.

News10 TV had about 30 seconds of coverage on the 6 o'clock news broadcast.  They reported the event went off "without a hitch" and the video showed a mellow time and people having fun, not one showy drag queen or bare ass in chaps.

dl.  About the promotion of this event...  I'm not sure the promotion of "Sacramento Pride 2005"  reached everyone.   George and Jeff, suburban couple, not bar goers, not local gay press readers, arrived at the event in the afternoon saying they just heard about it and didn't know there was a parade this morning.   There was no entry in yesterday's Sacramento Bee Ticket events calendar.  Was this event on the down low for the GLBTI- community?

Bottom line, great event, good times, thanks to all that made it happen, Cory Wilkerson by reading the program, and all.  Well done!

Your $7 admission fee is a fund raiser for our Lambda Community Center  www.lambdasac.org .
