Gray skies and a light rain couldn’t dampen the rainbow colors and festivities of the Sacramento California Pride Parade held June 4, 2011.
Groups and floats represented our local community diversity and pride.
Due to the inclement weather, the parade started with only 3 motorcycles, not the usual large loud group.
My favorite float was the Badlands entry with colorful balloon sculptures which didn’t get recorded due to camera man malfunction.
The pink umbrellas were out in force.
Well done Sacramento.
The Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus presented their 26th annual holiday show titled Wonderland this weekend. Another terrific performance. These guys are good. The chorus sang a wide range of songs from classical opera to traditional Christmas carols. As usual they added some fun songs like the campy “Coming Out On Christmas” and the football cheer “It’s Our Christmas Cheer” song pitting half the chorus against the other half in a challenge over who has the most spirit. Fun stuff! Usually the fun songs are my favorite but this year the father to child lullaby titled “Everything Possible” captured my fancy and tugged my heart strings. In this song, the father tells his child “you can be anybody you want to be” and that “I will love you still” and “the only measure” of you will be the love you leave behind. Everything Possible lyrics. The finale was an audience participation sing along of popular carols with the encouragement of the Artistic Director Paul Jones, the SGMC and the venue’s church organ.
This year the lyrics of “Winter Wonderland” made me raise my eyebrows- “Are you married? “ amid our fight for equality. As always the lyric “don we now our gay apparel” made me smirk.
Sacramento Pride 2010, June 19. The Parade kicked off with the roar of motorcycles and lasted nearly an hour. The Festival was held at the Capitol Mall for the first time, a brilliant move. This downtown location with the surrounding high rise buildings and the State Capitol is a powerful location to show pride.
